Review: Betwixt + Novellas

Follow the rest of the tour schedule here

Publication Date: November 5th, 2012
Genre: YA Paranormal
Amazon/Barnes and Noble
Beautiful, wild-child, Nicole Tepper, is hit by a car and left for dead. But when she wakes the next morning, Nicole finds herself in bed without a scratch. Perhaps she was more intoxicated than usual, as her mother is giving her the silent treatment and her friends are ignoring her as well.

Things take a turn for the weird when Nicole soon discovers she is actually hovering between life and death. Her body is lying in the forest while her spirit is searching for anyone who can hear her. Unfortunately the only person who can is Dale Finnigan, the guy she publicly humiliated with a sharp-tongued insult that has left him branded.

Desperate, Nicole has no choice but to haunt Dale and convince the freaked-out senior to help her. Will he find her body before it's too late? Or will the guy who tried to kill her with his car, beat him there and finish her off before anyone finds out?
I really enjoyed Betwixt! With realistic, flawed characters and a super cool plot, the book will definitely enthrall reader's and keep them up past their bedtime.

Nicole is in a little bit of a tough spot. Her body is in the middle of nowhere, seriously injured. Thankfully, Nicole’s spirit is free to roam around and get help. Easy, right? Nope. Dale is the only person that can hear her, and the two of them have a bit of unpleasant history. Dale was an intriguing character. He seemed to have his priorities straight, unlike Nicole, and had some cool backstory. I really wanted to slap Nicole for, at first, acting so terrible around him.

Watching Nicole grow was one of the best parts of the book. No better time to reflect on your life than when it is in danger of ending! Experiencing her revelations about Dale and her lousy choices was awesome. Lastly, Nicole’s voice was perfect, I loved reading with her narrating.

Also, I should mention the mystery involving the hit-and-run driver who nearly killed Nicole. This was a very interesting part of the story!!! Also, all the action that unfold after finding the culprit are some of my favorite scenes. In the end, I am not sure if the villain got what he deserves, but, never fear, my complaint is fixed in the nest novella!

Overall, Betwixt was a very, very addicting read! The mystery, characters, and development were splendid.

4/5 Stars

Now, onto a review of Before!

Publication Date: September 2013
Series: Betwixt #0.5
Amazon/Barnes and Noble
Dale Finnigan is a teenage rebel; he lives for parties, girls and joy riding in stolen cars. In spite of his uptight parents' constant warnings and lectures, he continues to run wild. His crazy lifestyle is the only way he can live and feel free… Until his reckless behavior takes him down a path where there is no going back.

In this prequel to BETWIXT, find out who Dale Finnigan was before he became known as“scar-face”—the unassuming hero everyone underestimates.
I thought this was a great novella to go along with Betwixt. Everyone who read the first novel will definitely like getting to know the young, rebelling Dale Finnigan.

In my opinion, Betwixt was better than Before. That said, Before was still a compelling read. Reading from Dale’s perspective might have given me a headache (boy does he make a lot of mistakes!) but his voice was super realistic.

This book made Dale seem so much more real and awesome! I am tempted to compare past Dale to the Dale we know and love in Betwixt. There is so much growth! His struggles with life, family, and other things made him three dimensional and I loved seeing some of his struggle's resolved!

Overall, I feel much more connection to Dale, now that I know his past!

Now, onto a review of Beyond!

Publication Date: October 20th, 2013
Series: Betwixt #1.5
Amazon/Barnes and Noble
Have you ever been so in love with someone, but not had the courage to tell them?

Nicole Tepper is that girl. She loves her boyfriend Dale, but fearing rejection, keeps her feelings buried deep. She can’t even let on how heartbroken she is when Dale begins applying for colleges thousands of miles away from her; never even whispering a word about how much she wishes he would stay close.

But, when Dale is rejected from Columbia University in NYC, due to a police record that follows him wherever he goes, Nicole soon discovers that love can drive her to do things she never thought possible.
What an awesome read!

Beyond went, well, beyond my expectations (haha!) After I finished reading Betwixt, I was sure that the author had a perfect conclusion and didn’t need another novella. Well, Melissa Pearl proved me wrong! I was immediately sucked into Nicole’s story!

I loved seeing Nicole and Dale together without the threat of her death! They were so sweet! I loved how, even though she didn’t want to be separated, Nicole made it her mission to get Dale into his dream college. Do you remember how I mentioned I thought the villain of Betwixt got off easy? That is fixed in Beyond! Seeing their terrible acts come back and bite might have been the best part of the book!

Overall, I loved this conclusion to the Betwixt trilogy. I am left immensely satisfied!

The Promise of Amazing: Review, Interview, and Giveaway

Publication Date: December 31st, 2013
Genre: YA Contemporary

Amazon/Barnes and Noble
Wren Caswell is average. Ranked in the middle of her class at Sacred Heart, she’s not popular, but not a social misfit. Wren is the quiet, “good” girl who's always done what she's supposed to—only now in her junior year, this passive strategy is backfiring. She wants to change, but doesn’t know how.

Grayson Barrett was the king of St. Gabe’s. Star of the lacrosse team, top of his class, on a fast track to a brilliant future—until he was expelled for being a “term paper pimp.” Now Gray is in a downward spiral and needs to change, but doesn’t know how.

One fateful night their paths cross when Wren, working at her family’s Arthurian-themed catering hall, performs the Heimlich on Gray as he chokes on a cocktail weenie, saving his life literally and figuratively. What follows is the complicated, awkward, hilarious, and tender tale of two teens shedding their pasts, figuring out who they are—and falling in love.

Interview: Robin Constantine

1. Hi Robin! Could you describe your book, The Promise of Amazing, in three words?

Sexy, Funny, Volatile.

2. Where is your favorite place to write?

This will be boring, but I like to write at home.  I need my creature comforts like warm socks, coffee and my dog!  And silence.  I have written in coffee shops, but always worry I’m taking up too much time and space and sometimes I get distracted being around too many people.  I’ve also found libraries are great places to edit, but during first draft, I’m usually at home.

3. Do you ever get Writer's Block? What do you do to overcome it?

Kind of, but I try not to call it Writer’s Block.  My process is pretty slow.  I find I have to think a lot about a book before I start writing it.  I’m not one of those people who can sit down and bang out a thousand words in an hour if I don’t know where I’m heading.  I’ve tried! I find if I give myself a word count and then fail I end up feeling worse.  So when I feel blocked, it’s most likely I’ve come to a snag in the story that I’m not quite sure of, so I do research, or try and write something else like a blog post.  I also sometimes ask myself specific questions about a character or plot point before I go to sleep at night, I write it out in a notebook and most times I have an answer when I wake up in the morning.  The creative process fascinates me!

4. I loved how Wren and Grayson alternated view points! Who’s chapters did you enjoy writing most? If you love each equally, can you tell us why?

Great question!!  I think I enjoyed writing both equally, although there was something about writing from a male POV that was particularly liberating.  Grayson’s chapters were easier to write in the first draft but had to be edited quite a bit during the revision process.  He was a very visceral, shoot from the hip character and I think he came off even more abrasive at first.  Since I’m someone who definitely thinks before I act or speak, being able to just witness a character continually make a mess of things and work his way out of it was really fun.

5. What’s on your reading list this Winter?

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge
Vengeance, by Megan Miranda

6. Do you have any plans for future books?

Yes, right now I’m working on a companion novel to The Promise of Amazing, told from the POV of Wren’s best friend Madison.  It’s been so much fun revisiting old characters (Wren, Grayson and Jazz are in it!) and meeting new ones. I also have a summer beach romance that I’ve been playing around with for a while and perhaps a ghost story someday!

7. Were you a quiet teen, like Wren, or more of a social troublemaker, like Grayson?

I totally relate to Wren.  In school I was quiet and flew under the radar but was completely enthralled by troublemakers.  I had quite a few friends who fell into the troublemaker category!  It’s sort of fun living vicariously.  I can’t speak for all quiet people, but I know for me – there’s definitely an attraction to someone who seems to be so at ease to speak or act that they don’t worry about what other people are thinking.  In the first scene where Wren meets Grayson she says – “…there was something about the way he oozed confidence while acting so asinine that fascinated me.” – this is really something that interests me.

photo thepromiseofamazing_zpsa3dd8cf1.png8. I thought the last few sentences were amazing. How did you react to writing the very end of your novel?

Aww, thanks!!   Endings are hard, you want something that’s going to resonate and honestly, when you’ve worked so long on a book sometimes you wonder if what you’ve done is enough.  I loved going on this epic journey with Wren and Grayson (I’ve been with them for a long time!!) and I wanted them to have a really sexy, romantic and hopeful ending.  My original ending was a little different and focused more on Wren, so my editor suggested I do something so the reader is left knowing that these two live on in their own happily ever after.

As for getting to the end of a story…I’m not sure if I was relieved or just keeping my fingers crossed until my editor read and approved it!  I worried it wasn’t romantic enough or it was too vague, but ultimately I felt good about Wren and Grayson starting from a new point – in the place they first met.

Thanks so much for having me on your blog Emily!!

Review

Reading The Promise of Amazing was a really fun experience for me! After reading a few darker fantasies, I was super glad for the breath of fresh air. This book had me smiling and rooting for the characters in the way I had hoped and needed!

I loved the alternating viewpoints of Wren and Grayson. Wren is the quiet student, looking for change, and Grayson is the social troublemaker in, you guessed it, a heap of trouble. I really am glad that they each had their own distinct voice, as I hate it when POVs meld together.

I really liked how each character has his/her own family problems... making this story have multiple layers. Wren feels a pressure to live up to her siblings, and Grayson and his father have problems. While we are on the topic of Grayson, I have to say I really enjoyed his character. He is flawed, funny, unpredictable, and realistic. And I could totally relate to Wren. Seeing these two characters build a relationship was so awesome!

Although the story had it's serious side, that doesn't there weren't fun, lighter parts! Yeah, I was guily of laughing aloud a lot while reading The Promise of Amazing! I have this tradition where I highlight every line that produces a laugh out of me, and in this book I highlighted 19 parts. The romance was so sweet with such fun dialogue and inner monologue! Overall, I highly reccomend Robin Constantine's debut novel!

P.S. (Post Script)  I also really liked Wren's friends, Maddie and Jazz!!! I cannot tell you how stoked I am for Madison's story!

Exclusive Excerpt!

“Jealousy is cute on you, Pen.”

“Don't call me that,” I snap, pushing my coffee away from me. “And I'm not jealous.”

He leans back on the chair. "Sure. And I don’t think you’re adorable." I jerk my eyes up. He’s smiling. Screw this—this is so frustrating. I tap my foot under the table.

"We're stating the facts, right?" he says.

“Right,” I say.

I don’t have time for this. And what is wrong with this coffee? I feel like I swallowed a fire and it’s all just burning at my stomach.

“You look sick again,” he says.

The poorly—or perfectly—timed waitress comes back with Carter's coffee and a whole tray of drinks. Carter, obviously, flirts again. I don’t know if he’s doing it to get a reaction out of me, but I’m not going to give him one. I watch him and say nothing, but the whole time it feels darker inside my head and my stomach whirs. It’s more empty, and more full, and unsettled at once. The waitress turns to leave a when it happens.

The waitress coughs, as if she suddenly can’t breathe, and trips. She flies across the air. The tray spills all over a table of four. I gasp, horrified. Another waitress grabs her by the waist, trying to give her the Heimlich. The waitress coughs out the gum. She’s crying hysterically, apologizing to the customers dripping with water.

The weirdest part? As soon it happens, all the fury that was building up inside of me disappears. It’s calm again, normal. The change is so sudden that my fingernails dig into the table. All I can hear is the waitress’s cry.

"I don't know what happened," she sobs over and over again. I close my eyes. Everything inside me is completely still. No storm, no clawing, no emptiness or fullness. In fact, I’m suddenly starving.
Carter's looking at me when I open my eyes. There's something unsettling in his gaze, something suspicious.

“I gotta go,” I say. He starts to say something. I don't stay long enough to find out what it is.
Somehow I just did magic.

About Danielle:
Danielle Ellison is from a small town in West Virginia. She spent her childhood pretending to fly and talking to imaginary friends. When she grew up, she finally flew away (in an airplane) and started traveling the world. She hasn’t stopped yet, but someday she may decide to settle in one place. Her real life friends would definitely like that; they would probably also like if she stopped talking to her characters out loud.

SALT comes out in January 2014, and then it's sequel. In October 2014, FOLLOW ME THROUGH DARKNESS (book one of the BOUNDLESS Trilogy) comes out. She's got a busy few years!

Review: All Our Yesterdays

All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill
Publication Date: September 3rd, 2013
Genre: YA Science Fiction
Amazon/Barnes and Noble
"You have to kill him." Imprisoned in the heart of a secret military base, Em has nothing except the voice of the boy in the cell next door and the list of instructions she finds taped inside the drain.

Only Em can complete the final instruction. She’s tried everything to prevent the creation of a time machine that will tear the world apart. She holds the proof: a list she has never seen before, written in her own hand. Each failed attempt in the past has led her to the same terrible present—imprisoned and tortured by a sadistic man called the doctor while war rages outside.

Marina has loved her best friend James since the day he moved next door when they were children. A gorgeous, introverted science prodigy from one of America’s most famous families, James finally seems to be seeing Marina in a new way, too. But on one disastrous night, James’s life crumbles apart, and with it, Marina’s hopes for their future. Now someone is trying to kill him. Marina will protect James, no matter what. Even if it means opening her eyes to a truth so terrible that she may not survive it. At least not as the girl she once was.

All Our Yesterdays is a wrenching, brilliantly plotted story of fierce love, unthinkable sacrifice, and the infinite implications of our every choice.
So. I finally finished All Our Yesterdays. And, I have to say, I am quite disappointed. All Our Yesterday’s wasn’t a bad read, but after hearing so much praise I guess I just expected more from the story.

I actually really liked the first 30 pages or so, but then the story just went downhill. I began to feel bored, and disconnected to the characters. For example, at the beginning of the book I thought I would really like the character Finn. However, as the book progresses, I never felt like we, as the readers, got to know him any better. We got our first impression of him, and he just stayed that way. There was no real growth, although I did like getting to know “younger Finn”.

Fortunately, I liked Em/Marina. Perhaps because we share a nickname. (At school I am called “Em” not Emily.) My favorite scene in the whole book was between these two, when Em has an amazing realization that made me smile. If you have read the book you will know what I am talking about. Unfortunately, that was one of the only scenes that legitimately touched me.

The pacing, while it was always moving, felt very repetitive. There was a lot of running, and the characters never really did anything drastic until the end. Also, Em had some problems with killing James, which is understandable... at first. Then, her hesitancy started to get annoying and had dire consequences. I kind of wanted to shake her and tell her to learn from her mistakes. Either suck it up and shoot him for the good of Earth, or have someone else perform the deed. Don’t keep falling into the same hole!

I also did not like the ending, I kind of felt like the action was moving high speed, and then BAM. The book was over. I don't know if I will read the sequel, especially since I am not sure where the story will go. I guess I can only hope it will be better than the first one. I will definitely be on the lookout for reviews.

Overall, I wish that All Our Yesterdays had been more of a hit for me. There were interesting concepts, and a couple touching moments, but I had quite a few issues. That said, if you think you would have a differing opinion, go and pick up the book! I know the majority of the blogging community worships this book and it has a 4.12 average rating on Goodreads. Just do what is best for you!

Waiting on Wednesday #31

Publication Date: June 17th, 2014
Genre: Young Adult Mystery
Publisher: Henry Holt
Amazon/Barnes and Noble
In this new series told from multiple perspectives, teen members of a search and rescue team discover a dead body in the woods.

Alexis, Nick, and Ruby have very different backgrounds: Alexis has spent her life covering for her mom’s mental illness, Nick’s bravado hides his fear of not being good enough, and Ruby just wants to pursue her eccentric interests in a world that doesn’t understand her. When the three teens join Portland County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, they are teamed up to search for a autistic man lost in the woods. What they find instead is a dead body. In a friendship that will be forged in danger, fear, and courage, the three team up to find the girl’s killer—before he can strike one of their own.

This first book in April Henry’s Point Last Seen YA mystery series is full of riveting suspense, putting readers in the middle of harrowing rescues and crime scene investigations.
Initially, the cover drew me to this book. Sure, the eye shadow may be a little ridiculous...but I love all the green! Then, I read the synopsis and was utterly intrigued! I cannot wait to step into this mystery.

What are you waiting on this week?

Review: Pawn

Publication Date: November 26th, 2013
Genre: YA Dystopian
Amazon/Barnes and Noble
YOU CAN BE A VII. IF YOU GIVE UP EVERYTHING.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked—surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed …and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose—and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.
Pawn was a thrilling read, and no where near your typical, old-hat dystopian. Aimee Carter managed to create a world that wasn’t a copy cat, and I could tell she put a lot of work into making the future society seem unique and complete. Be on the lookout for this novel.

It seems to me that a lot of dystopians have love triangles (Hunger Games, The Selection, Shatter Me etc.) so I was elated when I realized that Pawn did not have a bothersome triangle of love and angst. I am not even against love triangles, but they can become overwhelming. Agreed? Pawn’s awesome romance was a nice relief. Benjy was a sweet love interest, and I hope to see more of him and Kitty together in the next book. They seem to click in an awesome way... and I am glad Benjy is not the average, cliched “bad boy” I have grown wearisome of.

That said, the romance is not the front-and-center of Pawn. Nope. The plot mostly revolves around Kitty’s masquerade as the adored Lila. After Kitty basically fails an important test of ranking, she is offered a chance for a much higher ranking. Kitty soon awakes as Lila, the prime minister’s niece, who is a dead, and a formerly rebellious leader of the group against the rankings, and, ultimately, the society.

However, as Kitty masquerades as Lila, she finds more and more lies and political battles. She is told many things, but neither her nor the reader know what to believe. I loved this part of Pawn. There is so much uncertainty and excitement on the part of the reader as you wait for juicy things to be revealed! The world that Kitty endures seems very terrible at the beginning, and just worsens as you learn more. Especially as the minister’s family and other powerful figures are immersed into chaos and fight among themselves. It is hard to tell what a character really wants, and sometimes, your first impression of a character is very wrong indeed. I only have one little complaint... there is this reveal I saw coming, and I thought Kitty should have considered the possibility sooner. Does it ever bother you when you figure something out before the main character does?

Overall, Pawn is an intriguing story, and I have high expectations for the sequel! If the book sounds up your alley, most definitely pick the thrilling ride up and immerse yourself into a twisted dystopian world!

4/5 Stars
