Newbie Blogger Diaries #6

Okay, I am not sure how I came up with this topic. However, here it is!

Anybody who has read City of Bones would know that epic line Clary has when Jace asks her what Ebay is.

"A magical place of great mythical power."

When I read this though, I don't think of Ebay though, I think of Goodreads. To book lovers all around, Goodreads is pretty darn magical. But, when you become a blogger on Goodreads, the site turns from Hogwarts to the dark, spider filled area of The Forbidden Forest.

Okay, maybe I am exaggerating. In all seriousness though, being a blogger opens up a lot of windows on Goodreads. You just need to know how to get through them.

Review: Of Poseidon

Of Poseidon by Anna Banks

Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he's heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen — literally, ouch! — both teens sense a connection.

But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma's gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom . . .

Told from both Emma and Galen's points of view, here is a fish-out-of-water story that sparkles with intrigue, humor, and waves of romance.

This is not a book I have read recently, but I was just thinking of Of Triton, the sequel which is coming out this month (*squee*) so I decided to post a quick review to get me even more excited and to tell people how awesome this book is!

The truth is I have read Of Posidon three times. The first time I read it, I gave it 2.5 stars on Goodreads. (Shocking, I know.) But, then, I read it again. And somehow changed my rating to 4.5 stars. And then I read it again. I now love, love, love this book. I don't know why I didn't like it the first time. Maybe I was just in a bad mood?

Okay, the characters. Galen is awesome, and so is Emma, Rayna, Rachel, and Toraf. What I loved most was how they all said such epicly funny things, whether they realized it or not. And, I mean, some things Syrena say are pretty humourous. Plus, all the characters are charming. Rayna and Emma both have their unique tempers, Toraf is plain laugh-out-loud funny, and Galen just kinda makes you smile. And there is sarcasm aplenty.

The plot is pretty quick but not too complicated. Although there is a major twist in the end. The good thing is that most of this book isn't too predictable. I whizzed right through without yawning or just waiting for something to happen. (At least the second and third time I read Of Poseidon.) I also loved how the story was told in both Emma and Galen's point of view.

As, I haven't read this recently I can't remember a lot. (Please tell me if I got anything mixed up in the comments!) I just remember epic dialogue, cool characters, a vivid setting, and a certain uniqueness. This book is everything I love! So, I cannot wait for Of Triton! I already have it preordered. I hope the end of May comes quick...

All in all, I loved Of Poseidon and I wrote this review to introduce people to this book or get old readers jazzed up about Of Triton! And also (guiltily admits) to show off the cover on my blog. Isn't it beautiful???

Also, It is reccomended you read Of Poseidon more than once! (See first paragraph)

Waiting on Wednesday #9

Frozen by Melissa De La Cruz and Michael Johnson

Set in 111 C.D., one hundred and eleven years after a Catastrophic Disaster has wiped out 99% of humanity and left the earth covered in ice, this new series introduces readers to a ragtag group of friends and the dawning of a new time. The world of reason, of mathematics and science, is ending, and a new civilization is being born from the ice: a world of magic and mayhem, sorcerers and spellcraft.

FROZEN is the first in a trilogy and is set to release in September of 2013..

This is not much a synopsis, I know, but Frozen sound so intriguing! Plus isn't that cover gorgeous?  I love how they have the dragon for the O, and the water effect with the girl, submerged except for her face.

I do love a good fantasy...  I can't wait for Frozen's release.

What are you waiting on this week?

And, please, please, please check out the 150 followers giveaway! There will be two winners that get to choose a book from the pile.

Review: The Golden Lily

The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.

Sydney would love to go to college, but instead, she’s been sent into hiding at a posh boarding school in Palm Springs, California–tasked with protecting Moroi princess Jill Dragomir from assassins who want to throw the Moroi court into civil war. Formerly in disgrace, Sydney is now praised for her loyalty and obedience, and held up as the model of an exemplary Alchemist.

But the closer she grows to Jill, Eddie, and especially Adrian, the more she finds herself questioning her age–old Alchemist beliefs, her idea of family, and the sense of what it means to truly belong. Her world becomes even more complicated when magical experiments show Sydney may hold the key to prevent becoming Strigoi—the fiercest vampires, the ones who don’t die. But it’s her fear of being just that—special, magical, powerful—that scares her more than anything. Equally daunting is her new romance with Brayden, a cute, brainy guy who seems to be her match in every way. Yet, as perfect as he seems, Sydney finds herself being drawn to someone else—someone forbidden to her.

When a shocking secret threatens to tear the vampire world apart, Sydney’s loyalties are suddenly tested more than ever before. She wonders how she's supposed to strike a balance between the principles and dogmas she's been taught, and what her instincts are now telling her.

Should she trust the Alchemists—or her heart?

No words. Really.  Although, since I am writing this review, I guess I'll have to find some quickly. Wow. This book was plain amazing.

So, let's start with Sydney, shall we? I really liked her most of the time, maybe because she is without a doubt the character I am most similar to, of all the books I've ever read. Which is nice because I can understand her.

In The Golden Lily, she realizes how she has come to care for her vampire friends, even though she is an alchemist. I thought this part was done really well! On a different note, I absolutely loved all of the characters period. They are all totally unique and so darn vivid. Really, I am convinced (Or maybe just desperately hoping) that Adrian is 100% real.

Also, I remember all of the characters' names and features as clear as day which shows how much they stuck with me. I loved reading about Jill and Eddie and Adrian and Dimitri and Sonya and Angeline and Micah and Trey and... well.... I'll stop there so you don't fall asleep, if you haven't already. All the characters are memorable and the dialogue between them flowed well.

This book really keeps you on your toes. So addicting... Cool things just keep happening. I love the little plots Mead incorporates. There are so many. Tattoos, Strigoi, hunters, alchemists etc. I practically finished this book in one day! And really need the next one!

"I turned from him and walked away, refusing to look back."
-The Golden Lily, page 418, very last sentence

And after that last sentence (not telling you who "he" is, hehe.) I am impatiently waiting to buy the Indigo Spell. I mean, isn't that such a mean sentence to end with? Need. Indigo. Spell.

I love how the romances all develop slow and realisticly. Finally. I mean in Bloodlines there was really no romance at all which was so refreshing... and in The Golden Lily I just found my favorite romance of all time!

I did think Zoe, Sydney's sister, would be mentioned and seen in this one more. Apparently I was wrong. Maybe in the next book? I predict there will be some serious sister drama throughout the series. I think the first book fore shadowed that a bit.

Also, Richelle Mead is making me think Vampires exist, her writing is that convincing, awesome, and striking. The setting, explanations, characters, and plots just add to that illusion.

Overall, The Golden Lily is such an amazing sequel, unlike most second books these days! 1000000000% amazing!
