Top Ten Tuesday #26

Hosted by the Broke and the Bookish

Top Ten Six Covers I Wish I Could Redesign

1. Obsidian
Where do I start? Well, Daemon looks creepy and he is about to be strangled by Katy. I am seriously creeped out by this cover. I would redesign the cover with different poses for the less creepy cover models... but I'd keep the cool font.

2. Bloodlines
Sydney needs to take off some makeup and I would definitely redesign the lily tattoo. I wish Adrian was smirking or smiling... as he just looks plain bored.

3. The Dark Divine
OW! My feet! Also, what is wrong her skin?

4. Heartbeat
I actually like this cover, I just don't think it is a fitting match for the story! The book is so much more than a cutesy romance.

5. Nevermore
I see this cover and automatically grimace. He must have lost his cheeks.

6. Insomnia
*Runs off screaming* I am scared of this cover. Seriously, I won't be surprised if this face appears in my nightmares. (Just kidding!)

What's on your list? :)

Damselfly (Damselfly #1)
Release Date: 11/11/13

In 2065, the Lilliput Project created Lina - the first six-inch-tall winged girl - as the solution to a worldwide energy and food crisis. Isolated in a compound amidst the forests of Denmark, Lina has grown up aware of only one purpose: learn how to survive in a world filled with hawks, bumblebees, and loneliness. However, on the eve of her sixteenth birthday, she discovers that she’s not the only teenager her size. Six 'Toms' were created shortly after Lina, and now her creators need to prove to the world that tiny people are the next logical step in human evolution. In other words, they need to prove that reproduction is possible.
Um. No thanks. Lina's already fallen in love with a boy she met online named Jack. Only he has no idea that thumbelina1847 could literally fit inside his heart.
When her creators threaten to hurt Jack unless she chooses a husband from among the ‘Toms’, Lina agrees to star in a reality TV series. Once the episodes begin to air, the secret of her size is out. Cut off from any contact with the outside world, Lina assumes Jack is no longer interested. After all, what guy would want to date a girl he can’t even kiss?
Slowly, very slowly, she befriends the six young men who see her as their only ticket to happiness. Perhaps she can make just one guy’s dream of love and companionship come true. But her creators have a few more twists in store for her that she never thought possible.
She’s not the only one playing to the cameras.

Excerpt:
When I was a little girl, about five or six years old, Mr. Coxworth gave me several pop-up children’s books. He propped them up on the kitchen counter in his house, and I would play in the paper castles and oceans. I’d never heard the stories my “forts” belonged to, so I made up my own instead.
Cinderella’s castle became the home of my “real parents,” who would come and rescue me someday and break the curse keeping me so tiny. We would ride away in a gilded carriage, and I would never have to return to Lilliput ever again.
Hansel and Gretel became my brother and sister. Together we would bury the evil witch in candy and then live in her gingerbread house forever. In my reimagining, Hansel was my protective older brother and Gretel much younger, the baby of the family. And I was smack in the middle. Normal. And I didn’t have to go to school or have tutors or learn old, dead languages.
The Snow Queen looked so very much like Dr. Christiansen in the illustrations that I imagined they were one and the same. Hansel and Gretel would come and spring me from her icy castle, and we would escape to our gingerbread house on the next page.
As I grew out of the pop-up books, I began to write my own stories in a little notebook. I called them my “True Tales,” and they were my dreams for what my life would have been if I’d been born under different circumstances. Tales of my first day at school, getting a poor grade in English, first crush, first kiss…
When I met Jack, I stopped writing them.
Today I write a new one. Not on paper. Not for anyone to find. I write it on my soul.

About the Author

I'm a visual effects artist for film and television by day, and at night I don my author cape and pen stories for the YA crowd. I love a good fairy tale, especially if there's a creepy twist, so that's what I write.
I met my husband in the World of Warcraft and we live in Los Angeles with our cat. We spend our time playing video games, reading, hiking, sweeping up cat hair, and cursing the terrible traffic.
I have a bachelor's degree in Religion and Philosophy from Hillsdale College, and some of my past jobs have included: swimming lessons teacher, lifeguard, furniture salesperson, barista, and loan officer. I was especially terrible at the loan officer bit and that's what prompted me to make a major change and go off to Canada to get a diploma in 3D Animation and Visual Effects. After that, I moved to Los Angeles by myself and roomed with two crazy sisters I found on Craigslist. But that's another tale.

Bookish Survey: Cast a Harry Potter Spell (Part Two)

Created by Flip That Page

This was such an awesome survey idea, created by Flip That Page, so I had to participate! I love Harry Potter spells, I have almost all of them memorized after years of studying to go to Hogwarts. Unfortunately, despite the intense studying I did as an 8-10 year old, I never received the Hogwarts letter. So, this is the perfect survey for me!

Also, I am separating this survey into two posts, this second post is about spells cast on you!

Now here is the list of spells and my answers.

--------------------------------------------

Stupefy
puts victim in unconscious state
A book with a chapter you couldn't seem to get over: The Golden Lily. The last chapter of The Golden Lily is pretty amazing! I won't tell you why because of those pesky Spoilers, but I can tell you that I reread the last chapter several times. Then, I cried for the next book!
Confundo
causes befuddlement or confusion
A book that generally confused you (edit by Emily: in a good way): I can't really think of any books that confused me in a negative way, but I can remember a couple of books that were supposed to befuddle us in the beginning. Boy, did Another Little Piece do just that! From the beginning, I was thrown into this world of heart eaters, amnesia, and a deadly, deadly cycle. So Awesome!

Crucio
inflects unbearable pain
A book that was a pain to read: Peeps by Scott Westerfield. While this wasn't a terrible book, I still squirmed at all the info on parasites and gruesome stuff. Ergh... Peeps was definitely a painful read in that sense. *Squirms more just thinking about it*

Episkey
heals relatively minor injuries
A feel good book you enjoyed: Audrey, Wait by Robin Benway. I CANNOT recommend this book highly enough. I laughed and smiled the whole entire time at Audrey's adventures as a famous rockstars ex-girlfriend... and the inspiration of his hit song Audrey, Wait! :D On my trip to Mexico, I read this book 3 times because of the lack of reading material, and I still love it!
Impedimenta
impedes target's progress
A book that kept you up all night: The False Prince by Jennifer Nelson. Woah. Woah. Woah. I was so, so immersed into Sage's world and story. And after reading a certain twist, I just had to get to the end. Seriously, my life depended on it. :)

Silencio
immediate silencing
A book that left you speechless: Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. By the end of this gorgeous book, I had a strange feeling of enlightenment and sadness. The writing, story, and characters are beautiful. Also, the portrayal of how much we can impact others is such a great theme.
Legilimens

allows you to delve into someone's mind
A book with well developed characters: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Cath, Wren, Levi, Reagan and the rest of the cast are so amazing, deep, and relatable. Also, Wren is a very realistic and non-sterotypical character. Rainbow Rowell nails the introverted fanfic writer on the head!!

Levicorpus
a spell that turns you upside down
A book that made you change your mind about a character in it's prequel: Shadow Kiss. Lissa grew on me throughout the series, but I really respected and connected to her in the last few books, unlike the very first book. She has what it takes to be an awesome queen.

Obliviate
used to conceal memories
A book with a story you can't remember: The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross. Yeah, I don't remember this story... yet I want to read the second book. XD
I know there is this girl named Finley and she has superpowers? Something like that? *Face palms*

Reducto
breaks through solid objects
A book that convinced you to reconsider a genre: Cinder by Marrisa Meyer. What an amazing sci-fi book! I was sucked into this cyborg CInderella tale. Now, I sometimes enjoy sci-fi and pick up the genre more :D

Rictumsempra
tickling spell
A book that made you laugh: I can only pick one? Um... perhaps Hearts at Stake or Awkward. Okay, I will choose Hearts at Stake as I have more to say on this one. Actually maybe just two words: read it! While Hearts at Stake is not a work of art, I loved the fun relationship between the best friends and their families and I was literally laughing the whole time!

Tarantallegra
makes you dance uncontrollably
A series final that made you feel giddy: The Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead. This is one of my favorite books... the end is just.... GAH! So good! There's action, romance and everything you want in a novel. (Also, I must mention that I am so glad there is the Bloodlines series so I can still live in this world.)

Bombarda Maxima

causes an explosion

A book that made you explode with the feels: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. This is probably my favorite light contemporary of ALL TIME. Actually, I just reread it for the fourth time a week ago. Also, I officially want to enroll into a boarding school in Paris. Anyone up for comin' with me?

So, that was part two! What do you think of this awesome survey?

Book Recommendations?

Help? Recommendations Needed!

Hi y'all! (I am not from Texas, I am quite far away in fact, but I love using the occasional y'all!) So, I am a booklover with a million bajillion books on my TBR list. Why am I asking for recommendations?

1) Well, I am wanting some good discussion books... for example My Sister's Keeper, The Giver, The Book Thief etc. I am in a writing/reading class where we read a good discussion book every month or so, and I love it lots!

2) A completed or very close to completed series recommendations would be very helpful. I have been on the lookout for finished/nearly finished young adult series and can find nothing! Some of my favorites I have read are Hex Hall, Harry Potter, Clockwork Prince, among others. Help, please?

I would LOVE it if you could suggest some books in each category! Thank you so, so much!

Happy Reading!

Waiting On Wednesday #29

Don't Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publication Date: April 15th, 2014
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
Amazon/Barnes and Noble
Samantha is a stranger in her own life. Until the night she disappeared with her best friend, Cassie, everyone said Sam had it all-popularity, wealth, and a dream boyfriend.

Sam has resurfaced, but she has no recollection of who she was or what happened to her that night. As she tries to piece together her life from before, she realizes it's one she no longer wants any part of. The old Sam took "mean girl" to a whole new level, and it's clear she and Cassie were more like best enemies. Sam is pretty sure that losing her memories is like winning the lottery. She's getting a second chance at being a better daughter, sister, and friend, and she's falling hard for Carson Ortiz, a boy who has always looked out for her-even if the old Sam treated him like trash.

But Cassie is still missing, and the facts about what happened to her that night isn't just buried deep inside of Sam's memory-someone else knows, someone who wants to make sure Sam stays quiet. All Sam wants is the truth, and if she can unlock her clouded memories of that fateful night, she can finally move on. But what if not remembering is the only thing keeping Sam alive?
Well, there are so many reasons I am waiting for Don't Look Back! The primary reason is that Jennifer L. Armentrout has written other books I love. Also, I am curious about how the cover relates to the book, and the synopsis had me watering for more.

What are you waiting on this week?

Review: Poison Dance

Poison Dance by Livia Blackburne
Publication Date: September 12th, 2013
Genre: High Fantasy
Source: Received for free in exchange for an honest review
Amazon/Barnes and Noble
James is skilled, efficient, and deadly, a hired blade navigating the shifting alliances of a deteriorating Assassin’s Guild. Then he meets Thalia, an alluring but troubled dancing girl who offers him a way out—if he’ll help her kill a powerful nobleman. With the Guild falling apart, it just might be worth the risk. But when you live, breathe, and love in a world that’s forever flirting with death, the slightest misstep can be poison.

Wow! Poison Dance was an amazing novella that left me salivating for Midnight Thief. The story is one you don't want to miss!

For those of you just hearing about this novella, Poison Dance is a novella surrounding James, a supporting character in the upcoming Midnight Thief. Also note, the novel Midnight Thief will be published by Disney-Hyperion in Summer 2014, so you can read this novella now to excite you about the release and get a early look into the world Livia Blackburne has created.

High Fantasy is my absolute favorite genre, earning itself the position after I devoured Tamora Pierce and Jessica Day George's many series, so needless to say, I had high expectations. Thankfully, my flying hopes were met. James's story was powerful, intriguing, and a great introduction to this new world.

Within the mere 54 pages, I actually felt like I connected to James, Thalia, and the rest of the cast. James had this cool and fascinating demeanor... I immediately wanted to know his story and secrets! Thalia was a very well written character, with her air of confidence and determination to murder a certain nobleman.

There is never a dull moment. Within the Assassin's Guild, many things are happening. Thalia is plotting a murder, James is teaching her, and there is a new leader that may just make James' and his friends lives more complicated.

You would think a novella, being a good but shorter than a 350 page book, wouldn't leave much of an impact on you. Wrong. By the end of Poison Dance, I definitely was filled with emotion, and I will report that the author ends James's story with a bang.

Overall, the superb world building, characters, amazing ending, dialogue, and writing in Poison Dance makes this novella a satisfying read. I know that myself and many others are anxiously awaiting Midnight Thief. Who wouldn't be counting the days 'till Midnight Thief after reading Poison Dance?

4.5/5 Stars (rounded up to five!)

Blog Tour: Daughter of Isis (Review + Giveaway)

 photo DaughterofIsisbanner_zpsd2229121.png
Today I bring you a review and a giveaway concerning Daughter of Isis by Kelsey Ketch! For more awesome content on this Egyptian mythology based tale, check out the full tour schedule!

 photo daughterofisis_zpsb8b149d3.jpgPublication Date: October 26h, 2013
Genre: Upper YA/ Mythology
Amazon/Barnes and Noble
The last thing Natara “Natti” Stone wants to do is to start anew at Setemple High School. She wished she had never left London. Yet the brutal murder of her maternal grandmother has made her life very complicated. The only clue related to her murder is an ancient, encrypted necklace Natti discovered after her grandmother’s death. And if trying to adjust to American life is not enough, Natti is being stalked by a mysterious, charming high school senior, Seth O’Keefe, who is annoyingly persistent in his attempts at seduction.

Seth O’Keefe is secretly a member of the Sons of Set, an order that worships the Egyptian god of chaos. Seth’s blessing from Set, his “charm,” never failed, except with one person: Natti Stone. Her ability to elude him infatuates and infuriates him, and he becomes obsessed with the chase. But the closer he gets to her, the more his emotions take a dangerous turn, and he risks breaking one of the most valued covenants of his order. The punishment for which is a fate worse than death.

The adventure this unlikely couple becomes engulfed in could cost them their lives and their souls.
Review:

Daughter of Isis was an addicting and enthralling read brimming with Egyptian mythology. I was pulled into the story after simply reading a page. Also, I was surprised that Daughter of Isis turned out to be very dark and unique!

The premise surrounds Natti and Seth. Natti has just moved to a new town, and it seems like a group of powerful, mean boys have a lot of control over the people. Thankfully, Natti sees the actions of the group as wrong, unlike the rest of the town who seem (magically?) oblivious to all the chaos.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting this book to be so... dark. There is enslavement, sacrifice of the human variety, and other old traditions that sickened me. However, I am pretty sure the author meant for the reader to feel the ways I just stated. It was part of the main points/plots of the book.

Unfortunately, I did not like Seth, except for maybe at the end. In the beginning, he is a terrible person, although that can easily be blamed on his dad. Also, there is a magical force that is often described in Seth that hungers for power. I think that if he had different parents and culture, he would have been a good person to begin with. I hope that he turns out to be a very awesome person in the next book.

I loved all the Egyptian mythology incorporated into Natti's story. I have always been a fan of myths, although I normally read about the descendants of Greece,  not Egypt, which is a good change of pace.

Now, I will mention the characters I hate and love. Well, who do I hate? Seth's dad wins the prize here. He is a cold, manipulative, and totally despicable. Ketch knows how to create a villain! And, actually, I disliked almost all of the Sons of Set. Although, you can expect to loathe them just from their title. Set is a big, bad, evil god after all! I will warn you that the author is very forward and blunt about all terrible customs of the bad guys. I loved the character of Wanda, Natti's sweet friend she meets at her new school. Wanda lightened the book up for me!

Overall, for me, the book wasn't about the "romance". Which, to me, felt more like a chase on Seth's part. It wasn't until the end that Seth even realized how he really felt for Natti! The aspects that enthralled me were the mystery, mythology, and egyptian customs. I am, however, looking forward to seeing Seth in the next book, and he better kick his dad's butt!
